ZONE 01

Formation

Introduces formative and early exploratory works. A biographical corridor. Photos, letters from the North before separation, and early sketches from his Tokyo days. Sets the historical weight.

ZONE 02

Displacement

Focuses on the trauma of the Korean War and the colors of the earth. Darker hues, rough textures, and solitary figures looking north. Foregrounds imagery associated with movement: roads, paths, trains. Displacement is articulated not as crossing borders, but as the permanent alteration of one's relationship to place.

ZONE 03

Land & Labor

Shifts from labor toward ritual as a sustaining structure. Seasonal festivals like Dano and Chuseok appear not as spectacles, but as lived continuity.

ZONE 04

Ritual

Hwang’s language reaches maturity through restraint. Displacement is expressed through endurance—land, animals, and cyclical labor.
